Chocolatl was formed in 2016 by Brian O'Callaghan and Sarah James. Brian is from Ireland, though he has lived in the UK for over ten years and Sarah is English. With a background in the hospitality and catering sector, they have always enjoyed combining a love of food with a genuine enthusiasm for good customer service.
Both passionate eaters of chocolate, the pair would regularly go to the Chocolate Show in Olympia Hall in London just to experience new and delicious chocolates and keep up to date with the incredible chocolatiers that have emerged over the past few years. It was in 2015 that they realised that as of yet, there were very few chocolate shops and cafes specialising in showcasing all of the various amazing chocolates that they enjoyed each year, as well as demonstrating the versatility of chocolate in cooking, both savoury and sweet.
Having lived in Costa Rica between 2008 and 2009, the pair were passionately interested in the modern day culture and cuisine in the Central American region, as well as the fascinating history of how the cacao bean, so highly prized by the Mesoamerican cultures, became a much enjoyed treat the world over.
The natural combination of their love of chocolate and their interest in this richly cultured part of the world led to the formation of Chocolatl (pronounced cho-co-lat-el), a play on the Aztec word, Xocolatl (sho-co-lat-el) meaning a frothy spiced beverage of ground cacao mixed with spices, from the Nahuatl language.
